Night-time Dance-and-mime-time – by Megan

It’s a weekday night. You’ve worked hard for your money all day and long for a musical moment. Shower time is undoubtedly the best time of day for singing, but the post-shower routine is just a little too much when you need to be in bed soon.

So you brush your teeth, wash your face, change into your pajamas and get into bed trying to bury that deep ache that only music can cure. “Tomorrow”, you tell yourself as you try to ignore the growing music shaped hole inside.

Dear friends, tomorrow is now today! Allow me to share with you something that began a few weeks ago that has become part of my night-time routine. It’s a little weird, yes, but it’s a lot of fun. In addition to my make-up removing, face cleansing and dental hygiene nightly routine have added a new category: ‘cheesy listening’.

I would call it my ‘Guilty Pleasure Night-time Routine’ but let’s face it, if I called it that not many of you would that I’m talking about music, so for now let’s stick with ‘Night-time Dance-and-mime-time’.

It’s really very simple. When you go to brush your teeth, pick the cheesiest guilty-pleasure song you can think of. A song that if you played it in front of any of your friends or family they would judge you forever for listening to it. (Recently, mine has been the Piña Colada Song or ‘Escape’ to give it it’s correct title). Though I suppose it could be a song you haven’t listened to in a while.

All you have to do next is play it loud and play it proud (ish). Mime to yourself in the mirror, go over that dance routine you imagine yourself doing if you were a character in a rom-com. It’s silly, it’s funny, it definitely shakes up the old ‘pre-sleep’ routine and it’ll give you a few minutes alone to unwind.

It definitely helps me relax. Though, most mornings I do wake up singing the Pina Colada song. In fact, I now know all of the lyrics. But, hey, it’s a small price to pay!

If you’re stuck for inspiration, other songs that have cropped up in my playlist have been:
