This is a short, but heartfelt fangirl post about favourite literary blog: Brain Pickings.
To me, it is everything that a literary blog should be: celebratory, relevant, endlessly engaging and perfectly intellectual. As a lover of literature, this is a blog that I urge everyone to read. Particularly my fellow bookworms.
Brain Pickings is the brainchild of Maria Popova who describes herself as
“an interestingness hunter-gatherer and curious mind at large” who strives to bring her readers “things you didn’t know you were interested in — until you are.”
While I love to surf the internet for whatever is trending – cats skateboarding or yawning, dogs being the best animals around, babies laughing, etc – I studied literature, media and culture studies in university and I have to say there are certain things I miss.
One of the most surprising of these is that I miss trawling through cultural theory trying to understand its relevance and eventually being inspired by it. I never thought I’d say that, but it is true. And this site fulfills the missing piece in a much more digestible way.
Poignant, inspiring, delightful and beautifully written, if you’re looking for something to tickle your literary fancy, I highly recommend Brain Pickings.
Here’s one of my favourite pieces about the 1968 book ‘How to be a Non-conformist’.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
